President’s Blog – July 2014

Our June meeting concludes the business for 2013/14, and we invited our newly elected members to attend our meeting to overlap the order of business. Our farewells were more difficult this year as we said good bye to so many. This was last board meeting for Rev. Katie, Roy King Jr., Darcy Baxter, Frank Satterwhite, Nancy Harrison, Wendy Robertson, and Mary Swain. We started our meeting individually described our feelings of gratitude.

The board reviewed and voted on the following agenda items:

Office Computer: Our office computer needed an upgrade from windows professional, which is no longer being supported by Microsoft. We voted on the purchase of a new office computer. Thank you to Beth Ogilvie for her technical assistance and training Kelli on the new system before leaving on vacation.

Personnel Committee: The Board approved to form this new committee to support and supervise our staff in the interim. This committee will bring recommendations to the board on how we will work with the interim minister on preparing regular evaluations for our staff.

UUA Retirement Plan: In order to continue to be a participating employer, every congregation must adopt the provisions of the 2014 Plan Restatement. To do so, the governing board must pass an adoption motion, submit the 2014 Employer Participation Agreement, and receive confirmation from the UUA. Failure to complete this agreement by 6/30/14 will not be able to submit contributions on behalf of their employees to TIAA-CREF (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association). This has been reviewed by the executive committee, and passed by the board.

Board Secretary: We unanimously elected Frank Burton as our next board secretary. This will be a two year commitment, serving from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2016.

R.E. Council: Diana Dickerson attended last month’s R.E. Council meeting. The committee has completed the job description and announcement for our DRE position. The job has been posted with PCD and the wider community including Cal State Hayward and Mills College.

Finance: Our incoming board treasurer, Marilyn Mosher will prepare a letter to the bank to address the changes to the signature cards on the church bank accounts. The board authorized the removal of Frank Satterwhite from the checking/savings account and adding Marilyn Mosher as a signatory. Karen Cook remains a signatory as a member of the finance committee. We intend to add Diana Dickerson and Marilyn Mosher to the signature cards for the money market account which holds the earnings from our endowment fund.

UUA PCD Dues: After reviewing the cash flow figures for June, the board voted unanimously to authorize Frank Satterwhite to pay the remaining UUA/PCD dues for this year.

Our next order of business will be welcoming our Interim Minister, Rev. Joy Atkinson. I’ll update the congregation next week in our community newsletter.

Warm regards ~ Colleen Dino
