Drumming for Spirit: An Always Beginning Drum Circle

The drum circle meets on the first Friday of the month from 7:00-9:00pm in the Sanctuary.

Do I need a drum? No. Bring what you have to use or to share, but we have a good selection of drums and other percussion instruments for you to experiment with.

What kinds of drums are you talking about? The African goblet-shaped drum called a djembe is common in drum circles, as are other hand drums from indigenous traditions, such as bodhrans, tambourines, tars, doumbeks, bongos, and congas. Other indigenous percussion instruments like claves, rattles, shakeres, cowbells, and maracas are all welcome. One caveat for people with drum sets:  To blend well with the other instruments, please bring practice pads only.

Is this appropriate for the entire family? The circle is especially appropriate for adults and spiritually and emotionally mature youth.

Do I have to know how to play? We ask only that you have a reasonable sense of rhythm, and be able to hold it while others are playing. Beginners and newcomers are always welcome.

What is the drum circle like? Plan to arrive between 7 and 7:15, as we form the circle to accommodate those present. At abut 7:15, we start acquainting ourselves with (1) each other, (2) the instruments, and (3) how we can “make a joyful noise” together. At 7:30, the circle begins with an honoring of the spirits present. Next, one person starts playing a simple rhythm.

As soon as you think you can play along, do so! Drum circles are unique in group musical experiences because the whole point is to forget about yourself and your performance skills, and relax into the feeling and spirit of the group, contributing as best you can. After this first rhythm comes to an end, we share our experiences and feelings, another rhythm begins, and we proceed as before. Normally, each rhythm will last at least 5 minutes. We close the circle by thanking and honoring all spirits present. We are out of the church parking lot by 9 PM.
