What's involved in becoming a Green Sanctuary?
We educate. As the central source of environmental education for UUs, we develop and distribute material for religious education and worship, and we provide forums for discussion.

Earth Festival: Green Sanctuary
~Rev. Katie Kandarian, Darryl & Renee Ray
Let’s celebrate the progress made so far along our quest to become a green sanctuary, to live more sustainably. What have we learned, and where can we improve?

Enriching Our Soil: Toward the Beloved Community
(Rev. Katie Kandarian)
Today, let us attempt to answer the questions “How can I make a difference in the world?” and “How can one smallish congregation make a difference?” As we dedicate our resources and ourselves, we find we live a life not only can sustaining, but possibly even enriching to our planet and each other.

What Color is Our Sky?
(Rev. Katie Kandarian & Carol Bodeau) There’s a slogan that calls us Church of the Boiling Globe. How do we deal with the reality of global warming without letting it paralyze us á la Chicken Little? And what do we do with those critics who say that we’re all Chicken Littles? How do we ground our response in our own deep, respectful theology?

How to Live Slow
(Rev. Katie Kandarian)
When even Starbucks has a drive-thru window, how can we attempt to live a life that moves at a bit of a slower pace? How can our food choices become an integral part of our choice to slow down and experience peace and contentment?
We support UUs in their personal and congregational efforts to create a healthy, just, and sustainable Earth.
We advocate within the UUA for a clear, strong denominational voice for Earth ministry.
Through Religious Education, we articulate theological, spiritual, and ethical implications of human behaviors that affect the Earth; highlighting the relationships between UU religious values, environment, and justice.
COMPOSTING WORKSHOP FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS!
Basic Composting Workshop, Sunday, April, 2009
About 24 people, including 3 kids, attended.
We had a free lunch followed by a basic composting workshop. Then we built a hot compost pile using our collection of old straw, manure, dried and fresh leaves, coffee grounds, tiny redwood chips, chopped twigs and grass clippings. We even tossed in our biodegradable plastic made from corn and our food scraps deep in the center of the pile.
On Tuesday I brought my compost thermometer to see how our pile was heating up. It was 148 degrees! On Wednesday it was 146 degrees. This was great news. We truly built our hot pile.
Every Sunday after second service, Renee, with any volunteers, will be turning the pile to help "reactivate" it. If all goes well, we will have beautiful compost in about two months.
More basic composting workshops will be available, as well as worm composting and children's RE programs. Keep an eye out for our future RE Three Sisters Garden, as well as many other fun events and happenings on our Starr King Green Sanctuary Grounds.
